I like that gamers apparently know so little about the cultivation theory of media effect that they can’t even articulate it beyond “because I say so”. Also, nobody is telling people to stop playing games now. I dunno where they got that from, that’s not even part of the same conversation.
Shit has more nuance than what they’re crediting it with. Syringe theory’s been debunked in like the 1960s. Reinforcement of existing cultural biases, yes, “making” you anything on its own, no.

If they’re “just fucking videogames“ it doesn’t matter what their content is. Mario can save the princess or find parts to do plumbing with, it doesn’t matter. The product can be skewed and chewed up and regurgitated all we want and it won’t matter, it’s just a fucking videogame. Let’s replace all of the characters with coloured dots. Doesn’t matter, they’re just fucking videogames. Context doesn’t matter, content doesn’t matter, it’s just coloured lights to have fun with right?
I mean come on, any artistic medium is open to interpretation and criticism, because that’s a function of art. Film theory, literary theory, theatre studies, all focus on the content and context of a particular work or movement of that media, but when you apply it to videogames (oooh, woe! Cause you said that games were art to contradict Ebert who said games were worthless!) suddenly you get all these people getting all pissy about basic art criticism. It’s like they hate games, and just want the prestige of being gamers, without doing anything but mindlessly consuming product, and without having to think about games in any way but “Yaaay, fun game“.

“ruin the fun for everyone” as if gamers haven’t been doing that since forever on messageboards fighting furiously over why this game should’ve gotten an 8.9 instead of an 8.8, fighting over who’s a real gamer and who isn’t, fighting over what consoles or games you own and swearing loyalty to one or two companies and fighting with who isn’t a god damn religious devout to them.
but nah, actual discussion and debate and appreciation of these games beyond the surface level is really the issue with the gaming community
